In this gripping, surprising, and informative story, we follow in the footsteps of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, the younger brother of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who became Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. Mexico may be far away, but the Miramar Castle is not—it was his dream home, where, as a lover of Egypt, he wanted to create a true Egyptian museum. This is where a local figure also enters the story and history: the collector Anton Lavrin from Vipava. And, of course, there is the mysterious sphinx, which fascinated Maximilian in particular. "The Mexican emperor and the curse of the sphinx" is the first book in a new book series we have called "Between the lines of history". Through gripping, surprising, and informative stories, the series will explore lesser-known aspects of history connected either with Slovenians abroad or with foreigners in our lands. The next book in the series will tell the story of the history of Postojna cave.
