This book features forty-one richly illustrated short essays—or portraits, reviews, and critiques—of domestic and foreign comics published in Slovenia, ranging from the children’s series Zvitorepec and Tintin to Lavrič’s socially engaged comics "Europe" and "Bosnian Fables". In short chapters, the author dissects imperialism in Disney comics, chauvinism in "Asterix", and racism in "Tintin"; at the same time, he offers a unique analysis of global and domestic comics, from American macho adventure comics of the 1930s to the underground scene and the sexual revolution of the 1960s—when the first feminist comics appeared—and, in the 1990s, gay heroes. Among domestic authors, he devotes special attention to the first anti-fascist comic from 1927, partisan comics, the flourishing of satirical comics after the Informbiro, Gatnik’s "Magna Purga", Lavrič’s socially critical comics from the 1990s, and a host of younger, socially engaged authors. |
