dc.description	This entry contains the first part of the e-book "Žalost zemlje" (Sorrow of the Earth) by Éric Vuillard translated into Slovenian by Suzana Koncut published by Založba /*cf in Ljubljana in 2026 (COBISS.SI-ID: 282094595, 978-961-257-019-4) "The Sorrow of the Earth" is a short story about how the heroic myth of the conquest of the Wild West took shape through the internationally successful "Wild West Show". Buffalo Bill, the creator of this grand spectacle—which was seen by 60 million spectators over the course of 20 years—can in fact be considered the inventor of mass entertainment or spectacle, the first “reality show.” The Wild West Show featured real Native Americans, whom Buffalo Bill may have thus saved from the genocide that was still taking place in the U.S. at the time. Alongside them were real cowboys, who had once actually fought against them. Through a series of adaptations and distortions of (uncomfortable) historical facts, the actual genocide of Native Americans was transformed on stage into a profitable spectacle that, through the power of the simulacrum, created a new “truth” and a reworked or entirely fictionalized image of the Native American. These stereotypes were later carried over into Westerns without any critical distance. With his incisive writing, Éric Vuillard, on the one hand, reveals the workings of the emerging society of the spectacle, and on the other, dismantles the heroic legend of the founding of the United States, behind which lie greed and cruel ruthlessness.
