Didier Eribon is a French intellectual who, in his autobiography, grapples with his past—or rather, the social imprint of the working class, the margins of society, and the poverty in which he grew up, as well as with the realization that he is gay—something he could not truly express in that environment, at least not in his youth. At the age of twenty, he went to study in Paris, which, so to speak, saved his life. After a successful career that took shape even beyond the borders of France and Europe, Eribon decided, upon returning to his native Reims, to confront the specific circumstances that he had not yet truly come to terms with—and likely never will —after all, he is convinced that, despite his high level of education, he never became part of the elite because of his background. From a sociological and philosophical perspective, he examines his background, his family, and society in the 1960s and concludes that poverty and the social class into which one is born leave an indelible mark on a person, despite their efforts and above-average academic achievements.
