dc.description This entry contains the first part of the e-book "Sveta Ivana Klavniška" (Saint Joan of the Stockyards) by Bertol Brecht translated into Slovenian by Mojca Kranjc and published by Založba /*cf in Ljubljana in 2026 (COBISS.SI-ID: 288105219, ISBN: 978-961-257-095-8). Bertolt Brecht wrote the play in 1930, when the Great Depression broke out (which began in the United States with the stock market crash on “Black Tuesday,” October 29, 1929). At the time, he was studying political economy; he was particularly interested in how the stock market and the circulation of capital functioned. Using the North American meat-processing industry as an example, he demonstrated how investors speculate, deliberately creating surpluses or shortages, thereby influencing the price movements of raw materials and products, stimulating or curbing production, and consequently affecting the price of labor and the unemployment rate. Another important dimension of the play is that Brecht introduces the church—represented by Ivana, the leader of a religious sect and his variation on the motif of the Maid of Orleans—into this market-driven slaughter orchestrated by various investors and speculators. Brecht’s Ivana takes on the role of a mediator between capitalists and workers with the aim of restarting the investment cycle, which alone can (at least temporarily) pull the capitalist machine out of the mud. At the same time, the church participates in the circulation of capital, as the industry’s largest capitalist allocates a portion of his profits to it.
