The poetry collection "Abonma" is the first openly lesbian poetry collection published in Slovenia. Upon its publication, Aleš Debeljak wrote: “The poetry debut Abonma by Nataša Velikonja is pleasantly surprising and quietly unsettling: a harmoniously simple lyrical language that does not hesitate either to naively catalogue the minutiae of everyday life in diary-like fashion or to sensitively reveal the small flutterings of the heart in matters of love; a pen from which a gently restrained erotic language pours forth, describing the unusual beauty and mystery of the female body and spirit in a richly diverse manner that only a woman’s gaze can provide; a book of delicate sensitivity and spontaneous directness, muted pain and witty social resourcefulness.” In the literary magazine Literatura, Jurij Hudolin wrote that Nataša Velikonja’s earliest magazine publications already “in their unusually perceptive lesbian subtlety testified to a freshness that might somewhat soften the ‘uptight’ conservative readers. Nataša’s verses are a series of gentle lyrical strokes, touches, bubbling in their ‘sadness over love pushed to the margins.’ Her refined emotionality is fascinating, characteristic of ecstatic poetic souls, ‘insatiable and forever wounded’ … Abonma consists of poetic fragments that do not ‘caress’ out of pity, but with the desire of the body and the pulse of the heart.”
