| dc.description | This entry contains the first part of the audiobook "Sanje v drugem jeziku" (Dreams in a foreign language) by author Igor Karlovšek (COBISS ID: 281294595, ISBN: 978-961-291-557-5). Through 46 dreamlike sketches rendered as prose poems, the reader follows, with a strong sense of suspense, the unpredictable logic of dreams, which the dreaming subject—always also the central protagonist of the dream—has no choice but to follow. The rationale for the 2020 Jenko Award states: In his latest poetry collection, Mozetič has transferred his exploration of the relationship between the personal and the political into the most intimate realm of the subject’s world: dreams. In doing so, he has surpassed his previous work and created one of the most exciting books of poetry in recent years. Despite their highly diverse chronotopes, the dreams encode one and the same archetypal situation, brutally inscribed into the coordinates of our contemporary world: the solitude of a fragile subject who, in seeking closeness with another, repeatedly experiences the drama of constant exposure to the panopticon of a society of spectacle, violence, and surveillance. Although driven by desire, the subject is often thrust into events or forced to act by covert mechanisms imposed upon them, often with the promise of genuine connection that ultimately turns into its opposite. The other, who might offer a refuge of tenderness, appears in the form of real people who have in one way or another left their mark on the dreamer’s life—mostly well-known international, Slovenian, and Yugoslav artists (Tomaž Šalamun and Aleš Debeljak, as well as Jean Genet, Jacques Izoard, Juan Goytisolo, and others). They often carry some form of knowledge or secret, which they convey to the dreamer through the dream narrative. A significant proportion of the poems deal with erotic gay themes, a recurring feature of the author’s work. |
