Leopold Suhodolčan spent his childhood years in border regions stretching from Žiri all the way to Svečina in the Slovene hills, depending on where his father, a customs officer, was stationed. Always far from the sea. That is why, during his boyhood, his dreams of the deep blue sea were fulfilled by the highly esteemed sailor suit with a real sailor cap — a true fashion hit of the prewar years. And instead of a ship, a bicycle was just as good for journeys around the wide surroundings. In these short stories, the writer recalls memories of his childhood and school years, of adventures and mishaps at home, while helping on neighboring farms, on the way to school, and at school itself. With affection, he remembers his parents, his grandfather and his bees, his sister, friends, and classmates. He tries his first swimming strokes in a nearby pond and dreams of putting on a circus performance.
