This entry contains the first part of the e-book "Vojske" (The armies) by Evelio Rosero translated into Slovenian by Tina Malič and published by Založba /*cf in Ljubljana in 2026 (COBISS.SI-ID: 288614147, ISBN: 978-961-257-215-0). In "The armies", he paints a brutally direct yet sensitive picture of the devastation wrought in the remote town of San José by the clashes between constantly warring factions—guerrillas, drug traffickers, paramilitaries, and the army. He tells the story through the eyes of Ismael, an elderly teacher, and intertwines the tragedy of the town with his personal tragedy: his wife Otilia, to whom he is deeply attached, disappeared during one of the clashes. Rosero is just as compelling when describing Ismael’s inner struggles, the loss and disintegration of his sense of self, as he is when weaving a vivid tapestry of the fates of the town’s inhabitants or depicting the raids that sow destruction and slowly transform the town into a ghost town. "The armies" offers a precise and harrowing glimpse into daily life in a land of perpetual civil war, while at the same time evolving into a universal tale of a powerless observer of a crumbling world—an ordinary person caught in the maelstrom of violence.
