This entry contains the first part of the audiobook "Lističi" (Leaflets) by author Milan Dekleva (COBISS ID: 277486595, ISBN: 978-961-291-547-6). In the background of this masterful literary fiction, we recognize numerous historical figures: among them the writer’s uncle Albert Širok, as well as a range of personalities from the worlds of art and culture — Ivan Cankar, Italo Svevo, Vladimir Bartol, Srečko Kosovel, Ciril Kosmač, Edvard Kocbek, Avgust Černigoj, and also Albert’s brother, the children’s writer Karel Širok, who, as a member of the organization TIGR, was executed in Draga near Begunje in 1942. Yet the slips of paper on which the novel’s main protagonist records diary notes over the years — either in the moment or from a temporal distance — and which at one point, torn from the diary, become shuffled into an entirely autonomous order, are far more than merely a valuable document of the bitterness of a particular place and time. This fragmentary novel offers a virtuoso meditation on the eternal themes of humanity. With striking erudition and the sensitivity of a lyric poet, Milan Dekleva touches on questions of freedom and violence, language and memory, as well as art as a powerful creative force pursuing the elusiveness of life — as though it wished to tame it, if only for a moment, only to ultimately acknowledge its supremacy. “Is life not like a tree,” the writer asks, “whose roots I cannot see and whose strength I only rarely sense, yet which draws me in with the trembling of its leaves?”
