| dc.description | The dataset AnimalConc contains 20,500 concordance lines extracted from the enTenTen21 corpus using Sketch Engine (published here with their permission), together with information from the subsequent linguistic analysis. The concordances were collected to investigate gender-based selectional preferences in the co-occurrence patterns of verbs of animal movement and sound emission with human agents. The primary dataset comprises 17,000 concordance lines representing 15 verbs of animal movement (amble, bound, flap, flit, flutter, frisk, gallop, lope, lumber, prowl, scamper, strut, swoop, trot, and waddle) and 19 verbs of animal sound emission (bark, bay, bleat, bray, cackle, cluck, coo, croak, crow, growl, hoot, howl, neigh, roar, screech, snarl, squeak, squeal, and whinny). An additional dataset contains 3,500 concordance lines for seven highly frequent verbs drawn from a range of semantic domains (make, say, take, see, think, come, and work). These supplementary verbs served as an empirical baseline against which the distribution of human agents associated with the animal-related verbs could be evaluated. For each of the 41 verbs, a random sample of 500 concordance lines was retrieved from enTenTen21 using Sketch Engine, with the query type set to ‘lemma’ and the part-of-speech tag specified as ‘verb’. Each verb is represented in a separate CSV file (e.g., M_lumber.csv, S_squeal.csv, B_think.csv; M, S, and B stand for movement, sound, and baseline, respectively). The concordance lines were subsequently analysed manually to identify the types of agents associated with each verb. Frequency counts for masculine and feminine human agents across all analysed verbs are provided in a separate file (analysis.csv). The CSV files are compressed into a single ZIP archive (AnimalConc.zip). |
