The right answer isn’t social acceptance that comes at the cost of being someone we don’t want to be just because others expect it—the world starts turning in the right direction when a boy like David can be just an ordinary boy, regardless of his sexual orientation. While his friends face their school-leaving exams and university applications as a rite of passage into adulthood, David seems to have another challenge to confront first: coming to terms with his sexuality. “I was beginning to get the feeling that my life would be one big mess, full of questions and doubts and searching. After last night, it simply couldn’t be any other way.” He tries to believe he is just like everyone else, yet he knows his desires lead him elsewhere. As he puts it, he is being someone he doesn’t want to be, simply because others want him to be that person. He is full of denial, evasion and attempts to convince himself that it is all just an experiment. A phase. Around others, he puts on a show of bravado to hide the fact that he likes boys. He is more interested in how far his biology teacher’s tattoo extends beneath his shirt sleeve than in his girlfriend. Will his friends turn their backs on him because of it? What will his mother say, now that her divorce has left her relying even more on her son and his future? How will his father, a police officer, react? And what about his girlfriend Laura, if she discovers that he fell in love with a mutual friend at the New Year’s Eve party? |
