dc.description This entry includes the first part of the e-book "Vpliv filmov na samorefleksijo gledalcev" (The influence of films on viewers' self-reflection) by author Patricija Fašalek (COBISS.SI-ID 289887235, ISBN 978-961-7283-60-0). To understand a film's story, it is important to engage with the film not only rationally but also emotionally. Watching a film awakens emotions and affects within us—some shared with the rest of the audience, others individual responses triggered by similarities between our own lives and the fictional narrative. This process brings memories to the surface and can prompt self-reflection in the viewer. Identification with a character and empathy are crucial for this self-reflection; in my research—conducted through in-depth interviews—I explored the commonalities among viewers' experiences regarding how films influence self-reflection, the conditions required for this to occur, and the extent to which it affects the viewer's evaluation of the film. By comparing the self-reflective experiences of six interviewees, I found that film can have a therapeutic effect: self-reflection arises as the viewer undergoes processes of character identification and catharsis, leading to the release of emotions and insight into personal issues, which the viewer can then begin to actively address. Viewers who have such an experience tend to rate the film highly. The film stories most likely to trigger self-reflection feature complex interpersonal relationships, multidimensional characters, and a realistic reflection of social conditions—elements considered in literary theory to be among the most important for evaluating a story. It is difficult to predict which film will prompt self-reflection in a viewer; however, a form of therapy known as cinema therapy is emerging based on this premise, as therapists can use film to help clarify a patient's issues.
