There is a wealth of philosophical books available. Their authors write about all manner of subjects. At any given moment, one might encounter an interesting thought—fresh and sparkling—or one that is somewhat worn, oft-repeated, and stale. What predominates in all this reflection? Pessimism and lamentation are most common. Philosophers are disgruntled; they are appalled by other people, society, the world, the planet, and life in general. They themselves largely know how things ought to be, yet few are willing to listen to them. In their eyes, others are ignorant and unenlightened—people whose eyes need to be opened. Why do they keep them so tightly shut? They ought to open them wide and see what the various sages, wise men, and scholars have to offer in their books. A recurring theme throughout the book is the realization that philosophy is certainly one of the sources of the joy of living. There is nothing loud or intrusive about this; it is a quiet yet supremely reliable joy. |
