"Si-s-tem" is a confessional novel about a female student torn between two demanding degree programs—medicine and law—and a full-time job that leaves her barely able to breathe. Amidst lectures, late-night studying, and work obligations, she is constantly on the move, searching for a room, time, and support, while her inner world is filled with romantic interests and emotional projections that simultaneously sap her focus. Caught in this tug-of-war, she gradually loses the battle against "the System"—an invisible web of rules, expectations, and compromises that dictates the rhythm of modern life. The novel is a candid chronicle of loss and the persistent search for one’s own voice, meaning, and place in a world where "everything is supposed to be fine"—provided we can manage to tally up the (all too) numerous losses. Nives Gogala is a poet and prose writer from Maribor. She publishes poetry, prose, and children's literature, and contributes to various literary magazines and projects. Her work often intertwines the intimate experiences of the individual with the realities of modern daily life.
