| dc.description | This entry contains the first part of the e-book "Zavrnjena tradicija" (A rejected tradition) by author Vesna Leskošek published by Založba /*cf in Ljubljana in 2026 (COBISS.SI-ID: 291186435, ISBN: 978-961-257-219-8). The first steps of the women’s movement were taken in Trieste, where the first female intellectuals began publicly advocating for the improvement of women’s status as early as the 19th century, and in the 20th century, they began moving to Ljubljana, where they founded new women’s associations and groups or joined existing ones. Women’s public activism also included political campaigns and the fight to change laws that barred them from joining political parties, accessing education, and obtaining better-paying jobs. The first part of the book is devoted to documenting and revealing the significance of these events. In the second part of the book, the author describes the everyday lives of women, which were shaped by the social construction of femininity and masculinity. The way in which marriage, motherhood, housework, and the private sphere functioned and were conceptualized placed women in a position of dependence from which there was no escape. The role of the Catholic Church in this regard was decisive, as it influenced women’s daily lives more than any other institution. The ban on abortion, the ban on divorce, and church marriage dictated how women lived and were designed to strip women of their power and influence over their own lives. |
