| dc.description | This entry includes the first part of the e-book "Makedonski pogovori in zgodbe" (Macedonian conversations and stories) by author Darka Zvonar Predan (COBISS.SI-ID 285374723, ISBN 978-961-7283-34-1). "It is, of course, no coincidence that the people I spoke with were primarily cultural figures and artists—after all, what is more enduring than art? Thus, the book presents—in the chronological order in which the interviews were written and published in the newspaper—a translator and dramaturg (who has since become the director of a Skopje theater), followed by a world-renowned guitarist, a theater director, a writer who is also an astute publisher, a playwright, and finally a film director who divides his time between New York and Skopje. All six Macedonian interviewees are connected to Slovenia in one way or another; the same applies to the six stories that follow, which are also arranged chronologically. These stories emerged after I visited Slovenian police officers in Gevgelija on the Greek border; the southernmost Slovenian association in Bitola; the sister of Macedonia’s first female poet (who died in an earthquake and was of Slovenian descent on her father’s side); Berovo—a town near the Bulgarian border saved from a catastrophic fire by Slovenian firefighters; the first Macedonian billionaire, who also successfully rescued a company in Slovenia; and a former Slovenian village along the Vardar River. Added to the Macedonian interviews and stories are a few selected columns that I have been publishing monthly in "Primorske novice" since July 2022. Although the title I chose as a unifying theme is "Sun and shadows in the Balkans", the columns focus primarily on Macedonia—and not just because my suitcases were barely unpacked after returning to Slovenia or because the memories were still fresh. The truth is that reality surpassed Lepa Burneski’s wish: I not only got to know Macedonia, but the country and its people also found a special place in my heart. The saying "out of sight, out of mind" certainly does not apply here. Now, I sincerely hope that as many readers as possible get to know this southern land—and that this book, of course, contributes to that." Darka Zvonar Predan |
