Aleksandra Kollontai was a communist revolutionary, feminist, and advocate for gender equality; she was the first woman in the world (since the founding of modern states) to serve as a member of a government and the first female diplomat. She was a key organizer of the workers’ opposition within the Bolshevik Party and a theorist of love and sexuality. Aleksandra Kollontai’s legacy is complex, yet due to her unique political career—which combined committed activism with theoretical work—she was, until recently, excluded from nearly all advanced political, academic, and university educational programs. Even today, her name remains unknown to those sectors of feminism not directly associated with Marxism. Yet her writings, especially those produced in the early years of the Soviet Revolution, offer an indispensable key to understanding the relationship between gender and class and open up perspectives that remain accurate, progressive, and radically significant even today. This booklet, published to mark the 150th anniversary of Aleksandra Kollontai’s birth, features four of her texts and two introductory essays that place her writing in a historical context and highlight its relevance for our time.
