| dc.description | This entry contains the first part of the e-book "Kdo govori o ljubezni" (Who is talking about love) by author Elaf Ali, translated by Iva Klemenčič (COBISS ID: 277854211, ISBN: 978-961-272-874-8). The novel "Who talks about love?" is a deeply moving autobiographical account by Swedish author Elaf Ali, who left Iraq at the age of four. She recounts her life story with brutal honesty – her upbringing is shaped by honor norms, where controlling girls’ lives is considered more important than their happiness. From an early age, she learns that different rules apply to her. With her first period, everything changes: she becomes part of the world of women, where strict expectations prevail and friendships with peers – especially boys – are forbidden. When a friend from an online chat room calls her, a storm is unleashed, revealing just how tightly her life is trapped in invisible webs of honor and shame. The author skillfully navigates between everyday life in Sweden and strict Iraqi family traditions, persistently and courageously searching for a path to herself – a path that is far from simple, but is the only right one. With great sensitivity and remarkable precision, Elaf Ali weaves her own memories together with thoughtful interviews, among which a candid dialogue with her father holds a special place – a man who had to undergo his own transformation in order to give his daughter freedom. In addition to the interviews, the story is enriched by factual information about life under honor-based norms. What emerges is a moving, multilayered account of control, resilience, and the extraordinary courage of a woman who calls for change and reminds us that the right to love, freedom, and self-determination belongs to every human being – regardless of gender. |
