Jabk continues and deepens the exploration already at the heart of Vesna Liponik’s debut, roko razje: how to give a voice to diverse interspecies relationships between beings understood beyond the binary framework of human and non-human. If the titular “hand” in Vesna’s debut was still capable of symbolizing the power to enact an already differently constituted human subjectivity, here, already in the title, it gives way to different beings—apples. No longer subordinated to the processes of traditional troping, the apples, through their omnipresence and diversity, cease to be the center and instead become the rhizomatic network of the book. Through representations of the experience of losing loved ones, forms of interspecies violence, romantic and sexual passion, collective action within (workers’) collectives, lesbian sisterhood, and the transgenerational transmission of trauma, Jabk continually engages with the question of how identities are formed at the intersection of gender, class, age, and species. This is an intimate political book that develops its conceptual premises through a balanced poetic mode.
