The novel Goodbye, Sun is not merely a gallery of precisely drawn characters caught up in complicated family relationships, peppered with humorous gems that family members, behind a mask of cynicism, hurl at one another. It is much more. The driving forces behind the novel are timeless themes: selfishness, envy, resentment, but also the desire for success and love, coupled with the disappointment of unfulfilled longings. Through the narration of a fifteen-year-old, we come to know the trauma of a petit-bourgeois family first in a comfortable house and later in a lavish mansion, complete with all the requisite status symbols, from silly paintings to the obligatory antlers on the wall. Yet what will continue to resonate with readers long afterward is the novel’s fundamental message about the dead end of an egoistic way of life, which ultimately descends into distress, despair, and even tragedy. |
