When the seasoned world traveller Evald Flisar sets out in later life to retrace his former journeys, hoping to discover how much the world has changed over four decades and how much his own increasingly unfamiliar self has changed with it, chance brings him to Simba, a small island in eastern Indonesia, where he encounters unusual people and extraordinary events. The island, whose inhabitants remain deeply attached to spirituality and ancient customs, has fallen prey to Wilson, an American businessman who exports life-size elephants carved from teak and imports everything he believes will help him "modernise" the island and, in doing so, claim it as his own. Tense and witty, the novel intertwines strange events with profound insights before, as so often in Flisar's work, ultimately turning into tragedy. Simba is a powerful warning against human greed, which is relentlessly driving the world towards destruction. Flisar, whose works have appeared in 250 translations across 42 languages, is also interested in another question: to what extent do our experiences and inventions gradually merge into something else, a mixture in which we can no longer distinguish truth from fiction? How much of what we believe to be a memory of past events is itself fictional? And to what extent are we little more than characters in a story that we continually create through our interpretations of what happens to us and the choices we make throughout our lives?
