The Turks stand at the gates of Maribor. They are led by Suleiman the Magnificent himself. From the perspective of human history, this is but a fleeting episode. For the people who were there, however, it is infinitely more. And it is precisely about them that Dragan Potočnik writes. Not in the black-and-white manner of stories about heroes and cowards, love and hatred, loyalty and betrayal. Potočnik allows his characters to be human. For whether they stand on this side of the wall or the other, they are all part of the same story. A story which, from the viewpoint of human history, is merely an episode, yet for them it is infinitely more. A story that is eternal—always the same and always different, and above all, without exception, complex and multi-layered. Because “the hatred we nurture is not always our own. Sometimes we inherit it. And perhaps we can also lay it down.” The writer’s and researcher’s passion also fills the pages of Potočnik’s novel Morporuk. The Turkish siege of Maribor in 1532—almost forgotten five hundred years later—was explored by the author in meticulous detail, but not merely to present its chronology. Time is more than a sequence of events; it is their experience, both intimate and collective. And all the characters in the novel, whether on the side of the invaders or the besieged, experience the events in full vitality—not in a black-and-white picture of good and evil, but in the richness of color and nuance, which is the only palette with which life can truly and meaningfully be painted.
