| dc.description | This entry contains the first part of the audiobook "En korak, en utrip srca" (One step, one heartbeat) by author Leopold Suhodolčan (COBISS ID: 277539843, ISBN: 978-961-291-545-2). Recreational marathon runner Samo Rugelj, author of acclaimed books on running and mountaineering such as "Delaj, teci, živi" and "Triglavske poti", and professionally a book editor and publisher, has over the years achieved almost everything he set out to accomplish in the field of endurance running. Only one “small thing” remained: just as, long ago in his youth, he had run his first road marathon with his father, the renowned psychiatrist Janez Rugelj, he too wished to pass the family marathon relay on to the next generation. Thus, exactly four decades after completing his first marathon, he set out with his son Jan for the original location of that marathon journey — Radenci. Yet this iconic Slovenian marathon serves merely as a starting point for a much broader story about human endurance, which the author explores in his new book, one that can also be read as his marathon and life testament. For many years, Rugelj searched for the optimal way to conquer marathons with as little pain as possible — ideally in an almost gentle manner. His investigative journey leads from the ancient Battle of Marathon and questions about how warriors of that time managed long distances, through the first male and female marathon runners and the challenges they faced within society while tackling this classic distance, all the way to modern endurance trials such as the increasingly popular backyard ultra, which pushes the limits of human capability to new extremes. As a lifelong seeker, Rugelj attempted to unravel this mysterious marathon knot through his own body and finally answer his enduring questions about it once and for all. The book "En korak, en utrip srca" is, on the one hand, a unique story about a family in which the marathon has taken root, and on the other, an inspiring account of how the harmonious symbiosis of the human spirit and body can overcome any physical limitation. |
