In this book, writer Ivan Sivec continues his popular and widely read series of historical novels titled Slovene Castle Stories. In volume 6, in the book Love by the Kolpa, he stops at Kostel Castle and the valley along the Kolpa River, where a great love between Marija from the left bank—the green-eyed beauty—and Martin from the right bank gives birth to a son, Mikula. Mikula follows a legendary path: from a communal herdsman to a peddler, from a livestock transporter to a salt smuggler, from a peddler to a castle scribe, from a bailiff to a lover, from a warrior to a legendary victor over the Turks. The book portrays the turbulent 16th century, when the Kostel Valley was frequently invaded by the Turks, when many Uskoks settled on the left bank, and when the second great peasant revolt broke out on Slovene soil. Particularly exciting is Mikula’s encounter with Primož Trubar, the author of the first Slovene books, the smuggling of books into the country, and Mikula’s triumphant campaigns against the Turks in 1578 and 1593. In all cases, however, one theme stands in the foreground—love.
