At the time, Alexandria was considered a major economic and commercial center, where ships arrived from all over the world. It was also a cosmopolitan city where European and Egyptian cultures met, as did members of the elite and ordinary workers, while Muslim and Catholic faiths coexisted. People spoke Arabic as well as French and English. The Alexandrian women left their young children at home and traveled to Egypt to nurse other people's children, torn emotionally between their families back home and the families they served in Egypt. Some left when they were young, while others were older, in order to pay off debts, protect their homes and farms, and ensure their families' survival. When they returned, their children no longer knew them, and they had grown distant from their husbands and other family members. They faced all kinds of conflicting emotions, while those around them were far from compassionate and spread all sorts of rumors about them. The author portrays their stories, suffering, and emotional turmoil with great sensitivity. The writing also incorporates words from the Primorska dialect. The book is deeply dramatic, and when the reader puts it down, they are left shaken to the core.
