No longer subordinated to the processes of traditional troping, the apples, through their omnipresence and diversity, cease to be the center and instead become the rhizomatic network of the book. Through representations of the experience of losing loved ones, forms of interspecies violence, romantic and sexual passion, collective action within (workers’) collectives, lesbian sisterhood, and the transgenerational transmission of trauma, Jabk continually engages with the question of how identities are formed at the intersection of gender, class, age, and species. This is an intimate political book that develops its conceptual premises through a balanced poetic mode.

Yet overarching his entire body of work is a fundamental, noble Enlightenment commitment: writing about freedom. The central message of this collection is expressed in a line from the seventh poem: “Where I come from, I could never look out. In this country where I am, I cannot look in.” Perhaps these “spaces of homelessness, carved into walls” represent Milan’s position as a foreigner, a migrant. For despite fleeting moments of fragile peace, homosexuality is and remains a scandal of civilization. To follow the unspoken? Milan Šelj has done so.
